This highly useful work begins with practical hints on how to find the employer of choice. It then moves on to such topics as how to create the resume that lands an interview. The book is not a theoretical treatise, rather, it is a practical "how to" book which offers excellent suggestions on such topics (which are not usually addressed by management consultants) as grooming, etiquette, humour on the job, and overcoming "ageism".
Empowering techniques are laid out for the reader in a straightforward and in an easy to digest fashion. The combination of bullet point lists interspersed with the "Ask Colleen" feature is a strength of this text. Suggested ground rules are laid out in a clear and concise fashion. The
book is very practical in its approach. For example, not only are principles offered, but down to earth answers to perplexing conundrums are provided. In particular, the section entitled "Answers to Tough Interview Questions" will prove to be most useful to those facing job interviews.
The chapters of the book that I found most engaging were: "Fireproofing Your Job", "Choosing a
Mentor
" and "Successful Career Habits". If regularly applied by employees, the tips contained in these three sections can and will result in a longer, more successful, and satisfying working career.
